Stair mats are mats placed on individual stairs and they serve several purposes as we’ll discuss below.
The terms “stair mats” and “stair treads” are often used interchangeably, however in my mind there are some distinct differences.
A mat is, according to Wikipedia, “a generic term for a piece of fabric or flat material, generally placed on a floor or other flat surface.” Notice that there is no mention of gluing, tacking, or other attachments; a mat is merely placed down on the floor, stairs, or whereever it goes.
A stair tread, regardless of which type or construction, may be laid down on the stair or maybe nailed, glued, tacked or otherwise permanently attached. Some stair treads are stair mats as they are not permanently attached and all stair mats are stair treads as a stair tread is simply the part you step on. Now that we have that little difference aside and have defined our terms, let’s discuss the reasons to use stair mats as well look at some different types. Do remember however that some manufacturers may use the terms interchangeable, and some stair coverings may be optionally permanently attached, for example with double sided carpet glue or similarly. Following their directions is usually a good idea.
Stair mats protect what’s under the mat, protecting
the stairs from ordinary and unordinary wear and tear. When they become
worn out or beaten looking, they can be easily replaced and hopefully
the underlying stair has been well protected. These Washable Carpet Stair Treads
fit that description as although they are attractive, their main selling
point is that they protect the stairs underneath. They can extend the
life of hardwood stairs before refinishing is desirable, are described
as ideal for pets and pet owners, and have a non-skid foam back and
double sided carpet tape can be used for installation as well.
Stair mats also protect what’s on top of them, namely
the people (or animals) walking on them. Many are not only soft and
comfortable on the feet, but also have non slip surfaces to help protect
against slips and falls (and many people are injured, some very
seriously, on stairs every year). These HeatTrak Heated Stairs Mats
are designed for outdoor stair safety and plug into a standard 120
volt outlet, melting ice and snow! They are durable enough and
designed to be left out all winter.
They can also be designed primarily to trap dirt and
moisture much like a welcome mat. For example these Water Guard Stair Treads
simply lay down with their slip resistant backing and have a unique
ridged construction that traps dirt and moisture. They can be easily
picked up to be washed, for example with a hose, come in multiple
colors, and can be used indoors or out.
Many are also attractive and used for decorative
purposes, both indoors and out. For example, I love these gorgeous Tan Scrollworks Premium Carpet Stair Treads.
Yes, they also protect the stairs and can help prevent slips and
falls, but to me their number one attribute is that they look good!
Stair mats can also perform one other fairly important job, making the stairs quieter. This can be because you are sneaking home from a late night at the pub, to quiet little feet running up and down the stairs, as well as just generally making the staircases quieter, certainly a good thing. Any mats made of carpet will help with noise, generally the thicker the better.
