Outdoor Stair Treads

Stair treads are particularly important outdoors. How often is it that your indoor stairs are wet, snowy, icy, have leaves on them, etc.? Hopefully rarely! Outdoors stairs are more likely to be slippery.

These slippery and treacherous conditions are unfortunately commonplace with outdoor stairs, hence the need for outdoor stair treads. Your outdoor staircases may also be more likely to be used when not well lit, making the possibility of a slip and serious fall more likely. They usually have an "open weave" design that lets water, snow and dirt fall through, where it is less likely to affect someone's footing.

Outdoor stair treads can be made of many different types of materials. Rubber is common, and they often have self adhesive backings as well making them easy to apply. Do it when your stairs are dry and clean for maximum sticking power of course. Rubber treads come in all kinds of decorative patterns, and we've gone with a garden motif for our back steps.

Carpet stair treads are also popular for outdoor use and may be made of all weather polypropylene or a similar material. There are both models intended to be permanently stuck to your stairs as well as models with a non slip rubber backing, which among other things makes them easy to pick up and shake out any accumulated dirt and other debris, similar to a doormat.

Stair treads for outdoor use can also be made from a variety of other materials, including aluminum and vinyl, and another option is non slip tape, sometimes also called anti slip tape.

Another safety feature to consider is a railing. Fortunately most outdoor stairs have railings, although they may be difficult to use when carry groceries or other objects.

You can find outdoor stair treads locally in many different places, or online for a larger selection. Regardless of where you plan on buying, you may want to peruse the large selection of outdoor stair treads at Amazon.
