Non Slip Stair Treads

Non Slip Stair Treads are designed to prevent you from slipping on stairs and hurting yourself.

Stair Treads are simply something you place on your stairs to walk on. The Merrian-Webster dictionary definition of tread includes "step or walk on or over,"  "to walk or proceed along," and "to beat or press with the feet."

There are multiple reasons for using stair treads, including fashion and protecting your stairs, usually one of the highest traffic areas, from wear and tear. However the most important reason for stair treads, at least in my opinion, is safety. Non slip stair treads prevent people from slipping and falling.

Slipping and falling on stairs can be extremely dangerous and people can seriously injure themselves or even die from falls. Unfortunately, unlike slipping and falling on the ground or floor, people who fall on a staircase often fall down the stairs, bouncing and banging along the way down. Especially with long staircases and staircases made from extremely hard materials like concrete or brick, the result can be horrific. Even worse, sometimes people slip and fall off the staircase which can result in a long drop in many cases.

Stair treads can be made of many different types of materials. Common types include rubber, metal, vinyl, and carpet.  There are even glow in the dark stair treads made which are great for basement and outdoor stairs among others.

Another option is non slip tape, sometimes also called anti slip tape. It performs the same function but may not be particularly attractive, which may matter, for example for a master staircase.

Most stair treads come in pieces, one for each step, and they may have adhesive backings or the directions may recommend using adhesive to glue them to stairs. Some stair tread, most notably carpet stair tread, may be composed of one contiguous piece that covers the entire staircase from top to bottom.

I consider non slip stair treads to be simply common sense in many areas, for example on outside stairs that tend to get wet, icy, or snowy and slippery as well as anywhere else where people may slip and fall.
