Rubber Stair Treads

Rubber stair treads serve three purposes: safety, decor, and protecting your stairs.

Most are designed for outdoor use although they are often used indoors as well. Many models include a self adhesive backing, some recommend but do not include adhesive, while others function much as slip mats and are not permanently glued down.

Stair treads can be made of many materials besides rubber. For example plastic star treads, most notable vinyl stair treads, are often used as they are cheaper than rubber.

Safety: Safety is the number one reason to use rubber stair treads. They help provide a non slip surface and can turn slippery stairs into relatively safe stairs. A slip can result in serious injury or even death, not to mention the possibility of a serious lawsuit.

You can even get heated outdoor rubber stair treads to help keep outdoor stairs safe and slip-resistant during ice and snow storms during the winter.

Just this year my somewhat aged mother in law slipped on her cellar stairs and was  found at the bottom by the gardener who heard the fall. We are not sure if she lost consciousness or not, and fortunately despite a serious hit to her head she sustained no serious injuries - we're lucky. Despite being a tough old bird, she was quite sore for weeks afterwards. You can bet we made sure than staircase has a good set of stair treads afterwards.  We opted for carpet stair treads here.

I also slipped, barely escaping a fall, on our back outdoor stairs recently. Another spot for stair treads! Not sure if we'll be using rubber or perhaps metal stair treads here.

They are also a great way to add traction to truck bumpers, ladder steps, Recreational Vehicle steps, and more.

Decor: Decorative rubber stair treads come in different patterns to suit your taste and complement their environs. Vines, floral, and other garden patterns are popular, and straightforward industrial designs are common as well.

Protecting Your Stairs From Wear and Tear: One additional reason people use rubber stair treads is to protect their stairs from excessive wear and tear. Stair treads are easier, quicker, and faster to replace than the stairs themselves!

Rubber stair treads and others are locally available almost everywhere as well. Home Depot and other home improvement stores as well Target, Walmart, and hardware stores all usually stock them.
