Carpet Stair Treads

Carpet stair treads can add to the beauty of your house, protect your stairs from wear and tear, and help keep people from slipping, falling, and getting hurt.

They can also deaden sounds and make your stairs quieter, for example deadening the sounds of little footsteps scampering up and down stairs.

Originally, carpet stair treads consisted of a small pieces of carpet, one for each step. Today, many people carpet the entire tread of stairs. Both approaches are popular.

Carpet stair treads are available for both indoor and outdoor use although they are more popular indoors. For example, our front staircase, visible from the front hall to anyone who visits our home, has a beautiful carpet stair tread from top to bottom that fits in and adds to our decor. Admittedly my wife, who has a far better eye and sense for what looks good that do I, spent weeks pouring over carpet samples to make the perfect choice.

Our front staircase is covered in beautiful hardwood flooring, which is why we chose a carpet stair tread instead of covering the entire stairs with carpet. It leaves approximately six inches of hardwood floor visible on each side and works extremely well.

We've had it down for about 10 years, since shortly before our son was borne. With three kids running around, not surprisingly, it's gotten a lot of wear and tear. Even without children, stairs tend to get a lot of wear and tear, often the most of anywhere in the house or building.

We are replacing it in the next few weeks - in fact we have a new carpet chosen to replace it. It is far easier to replace carpet treads than to replace the hardwood flooring on our staircase.

Not surprisingly, one of the primary reasons for carpet stair treads is to protect your stairs, including from ordinary wear as well as chips, dings, and other blemishes.

Carpet stair treads also help prevent people from slipping and falling on stairs. People can be severely injured from falls and making sure your stairs aren't slippery is a significant safety issue. One of the primary reasons for outdoor carpet stair treads is in fact to make them less slippery and treacherous, especially an issue when they are wet, icy, or snowy.

You can find carpet stair treads almost anywhere, for example carpet stores, big department stores, etc., although you may find a larger selection or at least get some great ideas online. For example, Amazon has a big selection of carpet stair treads.
