Aluminum Stair Treads

Aluminum stair treads are simply stair treads made of aluminum of course, but there are important details.

Usually some type of aluminum alloy is used, and there may also be other components or ingredients such as various types of anti slip surfaces. This could be some type of grit incorporated into the surface or perhaps an epoxy based coating. Serrated surfaces are also popular for non slip purposes.

At the basic level, there are two types of aluminum stair treads. One is structural or weight bearing stair treads, and the other is placed on the structural treads for multiple purposes, including protecting structural treads from wear, strong anti slip qualities, and restoration.

An example of aluminum structural treads are ones from American Safety products. They are made from Alumacast, which they refer to as "corrosion resistant" and "maintenance-free." They come in a dozen different styles and tread widths from 4 to 12 inches.

Several of them are self supporting, meaning no bracing or risers are required, are long lasting, impact resistant, have build in anti slip protection via embedded granules, and are economical. They are also available made of other metals.

To complete the picture, when you think aluminum structural stair treads, think industrial and heavy commercial use.

Two examples of non structural treads follow.

The first is Amsteps Products series 300, 500, and 700 treads. they are designed to go down on top of existing yet worn treads for renovations.

The 300 series is easily installed on existing stairs; sometimes all that is needed for preparation is cleaning the stairs. They are often used indoors for educational, health care, commercial, and industrial facilities, and come in multiple colors and widths ranging from 3 to 5 inches.

The 500 series is similar but can cover the entire structural treads. They range from 4 to 11 inches wide.

Think of the 700 series as super heavy duty. For example they are often used in mass transit facilities.

The second example of non structural treads are Amstep Products series 100 and 200 stair nosings for new steps. They cover the front part of the structural stair tread.

In general, aluminum stair treads mean industrial or commercial. They are far less commonly used in residential construction.
